Great Equipment

Submitted by Michael & Bernadette (Jacksonville, FL) on Dec, 2012

We researched this equipment prior to purchase and found this device was rated as one of the best by Consumer Reports. It's about what we expected to spend, and holiday pricing and free shipping sealed the deal. We are very happy with the purchase.

We found the equipment to be well made and rock solid. It was delivered directly to our living room without a problem. We put the machine together ourselves, watching the online (You Tube) video and reading the manual. It went together exactly as described with not one problem. The tools were supplied and held up well (many supplied tools fail quickly), all parts were already lubricated, and the equipment is very well built. Its as quiet as they come.

The equipment works very well, as reviewed by Consumer reports, and is very easy to learn and operate.

Recommend this to anyone interested in the equipment.

Now comes the hard part.....

It is so easy on my body!!! I went fast walking outside the other day and I could tell how hard on my body the pavement was! That was the first time that I went outside walking since i got the elliptical. I won't walk outside again. I'll stay on elliptical

Good Quality for the (Sale) Price

Submitted by David Allen Rivera (Millersburg, PA) on Apr, 2016

I had an 18-year old treadmill that has suddenly become unreliable (and I haven't worked out on a regular basis because of that), which is a moot point; because I am a 59-year old male whose body is quickly becoming unreliable. I was in the market for an Elliptical that would be easier on my knees. And, I had to be able to buy it locally so I wasn't spending $150 for freight. And, it had to be around $500. So, about the only place around was Dick's, and they had a few units. I didn't need a big, fancy, expensive machine. I wanted something small, no-frills and cheap; but relatively good quality. I saw this unit was on sale for 40% off, and it seemed pretty solid. I actually didn't turn it on, because I figured anything would be quieter than my old treadmill. I picked it up at the store. And of course it wouldn't fit in the car (Chevy Impala); so I had to stand it up at an angle in my trunk, and bungee cord it in place after 2 guys from the store shoved it in there. When I got it home, 30 miles away, I had to move a 182 pound box out of my trunk and into my house. Amazingly I was able to do it, then once I got it there, I carried all the pieces up to my 3rd floor attic. Actually, there are not that many pieces.

The instructions are very good, and the directions are easy to follow. The parts are all secured in separate shrink-wrapped sections of a card, and they even throw in the tools it takes to put it together (Awesome!). There are only 8 steps. I'm not mechanically inclined, so it took, all together, about 2 hours, as I was taking my time. I ran into 1 snag that delayed completion by 2 days. On Step 6, the 'ears' on the Lower Handlebar were twisted and wouldn't line-up to accomodate the bolt. After 2 days I was told that it wasn't defective, that there is a bolt under those 'ears' to adjust them. And by golly, inset under that piece was an adjustment bolt to do that. It would have been nice if that fact was in the instructions.

Once together, the unit is so quiet, I had to push the resistance up just to make sure it was working. So in that regard, it runs very nice. Two things I'll mention just for the sake of completeness. The onboard 3-speed fan is not very effective; and the 2 onboard speakers do not have a rich sound. But I didn't have either with my treadmill, which is why I have a box fan and headphones. But if it is important to you, be aware. Other than that, the operation is very smooth, and the quality seems very solid. The different programs, settings, and readouts on the digital displays work okay. I haven't really gotten into yet. Again, with my treadmil, about the only thing it really gave me was the time and distance, so that's about all I need. This unit gives you considerably more. But whether I choose to fool around with all that, I'll have to wait and see.

Whether it will last 18 years like the treadmill (mfg for Sears), remains to be seen; but hopefully it will help me attain my health and weight goals for the next few years.

Easy to Assemble, simple design, good workout

Submitted by Rusty (San Jose, CA, CA) on Mar, 2016

Assembly was very clear, although any time you assemble something like this it is likely to be a frustrating experience at some point in the assembly. There isn't a ton of gimmicks, which I think is the strength of this machine. It is simple to use, and works very well. Burned 500 calories in 30 minutes 2 hours after I had it in my house. Can't wait to get on it tomorrow morning when I wake up.

Great machine for lower ceilings

Submitted by Bronco28 (Omaha, NE) on Mar, 2016

I am very pleased with this machine. First, the reason I chose the 3.5 after a lot of research is because it works well with lower ceilings. My basement ceiling is 7'6", and I am 6 feet, and I still have about 8" clearance. This machine does not have incline which would cause your head to get much closer to the ceiling. The machine at my gym did not have incline either so that is something I won't miss anyway. The resistance levels are just fine for me and I know I will never get close to using level 10. The machine is very smooth and quiet. The 18" stride feels normal so I have no complaints with the design.

I opened the box in the garage and carried all the parts downstairs by myself before assembly. All the metal parts are heavy duty and high quality and assembly was very well documented. There are two washers which should have a smaller hole to keep them centered during assembly, but if you use your head you can figure it out. There were 4 screws left over because they had been pre-installed in the back of the computer console. It took about 1 1/2 hours to put together.

This elliptical has the basic features you need, but not extra features and programs many people won't use anyway. Definitely a 5 star quality product.

Very Good Buy

Submitted by ksm (Chilliwack, BC) on Feb, 2016

I've had my 3.5AE elliptical for a year. I use it 4/5 days per week, although at 70 the workouts are not overly strenuous. From the beginning and for a long time the elliptical made a "clunking" noise, but foolishly I endured it. Then recently i decided to contact AFG and see if they could help. My experiences with warranties and service have been negative and I was not looking forward to what I anticipated would be a fight with AFG. I could not have been more wrong. From my first email to AFG to recently having it repaired the service was prompt, courteous and patient. My elliptical is now running very smoothly and quietly (which it could have been months ago if I'd contacted the company).

The problem with the elliptical was a broken bearing which caused considerable vibration and noise. It was noisy from the time I set it up and I'm certain the elliptical came that way. My assumption is that it was manufactured that way.

I like the machine and it more than meets my needs. I am 6' 1" and weigh 200 lbs and the machine suits my stride and is solid. I looked at and tried a lot of other ellipticals before getting the 3.5 AE and found it to be what I thought was the best.

It took two of us about 4 hours to assemble the machine, but we went slowly and carefully thoroughly greasing all parts with a top quality silicon grease. The instructions were clear and easy to follow.

A tip if you purchase one; when they say check to ensure all the washers are installed - check all the washers. I had two missing and they made more difference than I ever would have guessed. Good luck with your fitness. ksm

Great product if you can find it on sale

Submitted by Tsunami (Sherwood Park, AK) on Dec, 2014

The assembly was a breeze, thanks to the well written instructions and parts that were sorted by stages. Only had to use some elbow grease once. :) Unit seems very well built and solid. I am 6' @ 315lbs and so far it is holding up well. I don't think I would have purchased the unit at full price but was able to get it on sale for 60% off, which made this a no brainer.

Smooth, Lots of Options

Submitted by Kuril (Orland, CA) on Jan, 2014

We put the 4.1AE Elliptical together in two hours. The hardest part was lifting the flywheel out of the styrofoam and putting it into place. Lift with your legs! The lower handle bar set did have their Left and Right labels switched -- it didn't take long for us to figure it out since the geometry was all wrong. Fortunately they were easy to remove for swapping. So keep an eye on the excellent diagrams and double check component orientations. Be sure to carefully route the ribbon cables and keep the ribbon cables from binding at the handle bar cover screw shafts. These handle bar covers were a bit difficult to screw together. The instructions to put the elliptical together were excellent and I loved the shrink wrapped parts; at a glance you can know if you're missing anything or what you need.

The workout is great. Lots of options to choose from which should keep this Elliptical in use for a very long time. Incline and resistance levels with many combinations will keep workouts interesting and challenging.

The ergonomics are good. The foot pads are very accommodating for different people and the gel pads are far more comfortable than straight plastic (if you exercise barefoot or in non-slip yoga socks; a benefit of having an Elliptical at home!). The upper handle bars have a nice geometry that allow you to change hand positions to help workout different arm muscles when at high resistance. The water bottle holder is oversized and can fit a large water bottle, while keeping it out of your way. The built-in exercise programs are nice and scale well to your chosen exercise time. They do include a cool-down period.

The heart rate handle bars do take some time to measure a good heart rate, so be patient with that if checking your heart rate mid- or end of exercise. I haven't tried the remote heart monitor yet. Maybe the latest software update fixed that? I wish AFG would post a change log for software update fixes.

The Elliptical's interface is straight forward; one only has to read the manual to know how to switch users. The rest is easy since you're guided by prompts that say what button to push to do certain things. Software updates are very easy. We just put in an update that came out this January 2014; user settings weren't deleted but not sure about Profile/workout data just yet.

The Elliptical uses the 30 pin iPod dock connector, not Lightning. You can use a 30pin to Lightning adapter to control music on a newer iPod or iPhone but there is limited space for it; you might block the readouts. With at least the software before the update, iPod + Nike didn't work with Lightning iOS devices. We have an iPod Touch 2 with a 30 pin connector and the Elliptical tries to record workouts but distances have all been wrong. Workouts don't show up in History so we can't calibrate. Maybe the new 2014 software update fixes this? I haven't had a chance to check. The Elliptical loses a star because this feature doesn't even seem to work on the iPod Touch 2 with iOS 4.2. But at least music out and control works! It'll also charge your iOS device (ditto if you use a lightning adapter). If you get a lightning to 30 pin adapter, make sure your phone case won't get in the way.

Overall, excellent elliptical with a few minor issues when putting it together and iPod + Nike not functioning well on 30 pin iOS devices and not functioning at all on Lightning iOS devices with the 30 pin adapter.

Happy

Submitted by OneMoeWin (Chickasaw, OH) on Jan, 2014

Wife and I both use the machine. We are 30 something's who are somewhat active but kids limit workout time. She is 5-4, 100+(that is as far as I can say and remain happily married:)), I am 6-2, 205 so it works well for our different size and stride length. The 3.1 model would have been ok for my wife, to save the cost, but found it was not as stable as the 4.1 when I got on.

So far working machine working great,, smooth, except that my iPhone is not synchronizing like it should. Only tried once so I will reserve my opinion until I research further. I would think it should work like my ihome radio dock but it just says "No Ipod connected".

Remote heart monitor works great. I like this feature not having to hold the handles.

Like the scale of the machine in the house, not too big aand the quietness of it (especially compared to treadmill).

Overall 4 out of 5. I will up this rating if iphone works and if it last 5 years with no major issues. time will tell.

Excellent

Submitted by Hector (crown point, IN) on Aug, 2013

Had bilateral knee replacement in April 2013. Doctor and Therapist recommended buying an elliptical versus a treadmill. Did research and found this machine. I Love it. I work out every day and the muscles on my legs and knees are getting stronger daily. I feel more confident when I walk and my range of motion is getting better. My review on this elliptical - Well made, very sturdy, enjoyable machine to work out on.

Satisfied w/ self assembled unit

Submitted by RCF (Fulshear, TX) on Jun, 2013

I use it 3-4 times a week with a simple profile. Very smooth and quiet. I get the workout I need at a low intensity level so it provides ample margin for higher levels as I progress. Assembly instructions are good. Controls are well thought out and easily understood. The wIreless heart rate chest strap is a good addition, the pulse grips don't work well. I do not use the playback feature so no comments on that.

Excellent, solid product

Submitted by Jan (Westwood, MA) on Mar, 2013

Don't go cheaper. We purchased a significantly less expensive product from another store, and ended up returning it within a week of purchase. It was shoddily assembled, and broke after 10 minutes of use. I can imagine there might be many other scenarios, including use scenarios where one of us got badly hurt.

I don't think you can find a good elliptical for less than the $1300+ price name, irrespective of the brand.

We have used our 3.1e for a time now, and are happy with it.

The only drawbacks with the experience are that although we spent the $200+ for the extended warranty and service plan, and, yes, the unit was installed in our home, we feel a bit "abandoned", meaning we don't know where we are supposed to turn if there's a tune-up or service needed on the unit.

I also have a task to check out online how I might repair a squeak which is occurring when we use the unit. I have tightened every exposed nut and screw I can find, and still the squeak persists. I don't mind it so much but my partner does. I mind it if it indicates some component is being repeatedly stressed and may fail. I do not know yet.

Elliptical Review

Submitted by John Sherrer (Amarillo, TX) on Mar, 2013

I have been very impressed with our elliptical trainer. The quality is superb! The assembly instructions were the best that I have ever experienced for any product that I had to assemble. They instructions had numbers relating the nuts and bolts to the instructions to make sure the trainer was assembled using the correct parts and order. The only complaint that I have is the hand grip heart monitor is not very accurate. That is probably why a chest monitor is now included. All in all I am very pleased with my purchase and have really enjoyed the workout that I get from this trainer.

Time to exercise

Submitted by smueller (Columbia, MO) on Mar, 2013

Purchased online and only took a few days to receive with no problems. The directions to put the elliptical together were so detailed and easy to do. I am 51 and have not exercised for several years. It has been easy to start slow and work up to a longer workout. Wish only I could handle longer. I have been very satisfied with everything so far.

Solid

Submitted by The Morning Workout (Bucks County, PA) on Jan, 2013

I bought this product after getting plantars facitis. I run 4 miles a day but the plantars made that challenging. I wanted to get an elliptical to change things up. It's been good alternating running and elliptical days. The low impact/ stress to my foot of an elliptical was just what the doctor ordered.

This is a solid elliptical. It has great training features. Th money sunk into the actual equipment rather than fancy screens or tvs or internet which i prefer. It's very quiet and provides a smooth ride. The heart beat monitor is great. The footpedals are well designed and i don't have numbness or foot pain. I work up a sweat in 1/2 the time of same running. The arm action drives a higher heart rate. The construction is first rate. With that being said, there are three improvement that would be key. The first is a one time issue. The assembly is a pain. I am mechanical. It just takes a while and is tedious. Unlike my treadmill which was a couple of parts, the elliptical assemble should be much less complex than it is. Again that's a singular event. The second is a design issues. I am concerned that the wire connection from the handles to the main body via a pivot joint is very poorly designed. I won't be surprised if it wears out quickly. Thirdly, it lacks a fan. Even the most basic treadmills have fans. I bought one to blow on me. The last two are simple changes that I highly recommend changing in future designs. I hope for the first but think that is more doubtful.

First Impressions

Submitted by Raven Logics on Aug, 2012

My initial impressions of this elliptical are pretty good. It appears to be a fairly sturdy machine with a smooth operation. The resistance range is decent, with the highest setting probably being more than most home users will ever require. There is some noise between the rollers and the back rails (which might lessen as they wear in), but overall it's much quieter than I was expecting. The flat elipse is comfortable to use as are the MaxTone pedals, while the incline helps to target different parts of the legs.

The build quality obviously isn't going to be as solid as that of much more expensive commercial machines, but for the price point it appears to be pretty good. It can take my 180lbs at full pace without showing any signs of being unstable. The most important aspect of buying any cardio machine for home is finding one that you will actually use - although I have only had it for a few days, the AFG4.1 certainly appears to be good enough to give a gym quality workout. Hopefully it will stand the test of time as well!

Assembly was pretty straight forward. The screws are coordinated with their associated build stages and simple to understand instructions. It took a little over two hours to build, but it could conceivably take half that for someone less cautious than myself.

AFG 3.1AE Elliptical TRainer

Submitted by Tommy Joe (North Sutton, NH) on Mar, 2013

I recommend this product with reservations.

When I began assembling the trainer I had to halt progress as the right lower handlebar was missing. As this was a Saturday, I had to wait until Monday to call customer service. I found a very understanding woman who verified that the part was available and made arrangements to ship the part to me by 2-day Fed-Ex delivery.

After receiving the missing part I came to a step that said "Attach the 3 CONSOLE CABLES to the CONSOLE".. I found this strange as there were 4 cables. Three of the cables were similar with obvious cables coming from the console so I connected these and tucked away the fourth.

After completing the assembly. I turned on the power and nothing happened. I correctly guessed that the fourth, unconnected cable was the culprit so I disassembled the equipment and found where the fourth cable plugged into the console.

After one or two uses I found that the resistance became less when I went to a higher resistance setting. I called customer service who correctly diagnosed the problem as a miss-assembly of the cable that goes from the resistance magnets to the resistance motor. She set up a service number and gave me the name of a nearby representative to call

I called, the service rep and set up an appointment for a time two weeks later. He came and fixed the problem.

I have now been using the equipment daily but I have some doubts of the programming of some of the exercise programs.

Clearly, AFG needs to fix some problems in packing/shipping, product assembly and instruction manuals.

works great

Submitted by Colleen on Mar, 2012

after comparing many models I choose to buy this eliptical. My husband who is a treadmill fan tried it out when we got it home he loves it and so do I. We were replacing our older eliptical and wanted to make sure we got something we would be happy with for many years. It has a smooth natural stride which even with my knee and ankle problems causes no pain. The incline and resistance make it an awesome workout for my fit husband. It is quiet so there is no distracting noise when your on it and the chest heartrate monitor lets you know how hard you are working. Had it for 6 weeks now and have no regrets! We purchased a AFG recumbant bike a few years ago and were pretty sure the eliptical would be of the same quality. Great machine:)

Disappointing at best.

Submitted by BJ (Eustis, FL) on Aug, 2014

After a lot of research we decided to order the 3.1AE. There was a current offer of an extended warranty and apparently that's a good thing (although I would MUCH rather not use it). After a month the flywheel/sensors began making noise. Add to that the readout was completely incorrect. They assumed it was the sensors so they sent someone to replace it. I suggested they simply plug in a new head unit instead as it would be very quick to do and would narrow down the problem. They refused and did the sensor work. With 48 hours the noises came back, ten-fold. The readout continued to be wrong. The speed blasts from 5.0 to 17 or so, down to 4, up to 9...you get it. Obviously that means everything else is wrong. I'm not really burning 1300 calories in an hour, guaranteed. Fast forward to today. The mechanicals clunk like they're going to blow up at any second. It's therefore not safe in the event it would either lock up or slip under load. The electronics are still incorrect.
Disappointing at best. Would not recommend it. Apparently the negative reviews that I did find were correct. Almost exactly the issues we have.

I am in love with this machine!

Submitted by Anonymous on Feb, 2012

Let me just preface this review by stating that I am not an athlete, nor do I have any athletic inclination at all. I am female, 5’4”, looking to lose weight, and not terribly coordinated. I have used the fancy ellipticals at the gym and also test drove several different models and price points in various stores before deciding on this machine. Of all of the different models, this one met all of my “wants” for an elliptical.

This machine doesn’t have any unnecessary features, but has everything you do need. Although the AFG site has a lot of info about this machine, I wish they would really brag up the awesome features that make this machine unique from others in it’s price range. Here are a few:

1. Wireless heart rate monitor with chest strap – This is a must have in my opinion. I use the upper (moving) handles and don’t want to take my hands off repeatedly to get my heart beat.

2. Target Heart Zone program – This program works with the chest strap monitor to automatically adjust the resistance to keep your heart beat in your range (which you determine prior to starting the program). It will also stop the program if your heart beat is more than 25 beats over your range to keep you from over doing it. Because of this, make sure you pick a rate that is accurate. It may take a couple of tries before you find the right setting.

3. Auto-incline – This is a feature that is worth the extra money. No one wants to be in the middle of a workout to get off the machine and manually adjust the incline. Plus there are pre-set programs that utilize the incline feature as well.

4. Workout status window – This will allow you to see where you are in the program. This is nice as you can see if there is a hill up ahead and can brace yourself for it!

My experience with ellipticals in the past has been with the rear driven style. That kind would cause my knees to hurt after a few minutes on them, and that is essentially why I gave them up. Being front driven, this machine does not bother my knees at all. The only physical complaint that I would have is that my toes tend to fall asleep after a period of time, but I think that problem is indicative of all ellipticals. I just move my feet around on the pedals and that seems to help some.

Lastly, I did not buy this machine online, but rather from an authorized retailer. I had read several reviews online of different machines where people attempted to put their machine together by themselves, and after 2-4 hours they ended up with a machine that clanked, wobbled, or made some annoying sound with each pedal push. Because this machine is over 200, pounds paired with the fact that it is a $1,000 machine; I think that it is absolutely worth the extra money to pay for the delivery and installation. The retailer was prompt with the delivery and they unpacked the pieces before carrying them down to my basement to set it up. It was set up in less than an hour and worked perfectly, plus they got rid of the garbage! It is extremely quiet and very sturdy as well.

If you are looking for an elliptical, please consider this one! Really think about how you want to use it and what features are important to you. I looked at several models that had gimmicky things like built in fans and online progress tracking, but they left off the really useful features like the wireless heart rate monitor and target heart zone programs. I also compared this model against the AFG 4.1 AE, but decided that the additional features weren’t worth the additional money (at least not for me). The 3.1 AE is a great machine that is extremely versatile and is worth every penny!

noisy and cheapest

I'm really disappointed about this product. I change my Bremshey elliptical for this AFG 4.1 AE elliptical. Noisy and not resistant.

Circuit Problems

We had a tech at our house twice and still he could not figure out why the electric would not work on this model. We have decided to take the refund and go without this item.

Nike Plus doesn't work at all!

Submitted by Robertne (Bourbonnais, IL) on Nov, 2012

Instructions were a bit confusing at times, and had wrong screws for wrong steps. Nike plus doesn't work at all, even though my iPhone has the latest version of iOS and the elliptical has the latest software. The elliptical will not send workout data at all to my phone. Contacted both AFG and Nike plus and they are aware of the issue but have not resolved it. Very frustrated. If you want this elliptical for Nike Plus, I can not recommend it at all as the feature just doesn't work. It's very sad!
