Very Pleased

Submitted by Mike (Watertown, NY) on Jan, 2014

We bought our AFG 7.1 treadmill in November 2012 and have been very pleased. My daughter, a serious collegiate runner and I have used it when the weather is not conducive to outdoor running or in the mornings when it is still dark.

We wanted a treadmill that could handle heavy use and based on the reviews we read, felt this would be a good treadmill. In addition, for peace of mind, we purchased ours at Sears and bought the 5 year warranty that covers everything.

The treadmill is smooth, relatively quiet and feels very sturdy. It is not quite as quiet and sturdy as the commercial models I used to use at the local fitness center, but it is close.

We aren't putting on as many miles as we thought we might, but during the 5-6 months of winter we probably log about 25 miles a week at an average pace of 7:30 per mile. My daughter has done some interval and tempo workouts at 6:00-6:30 pace and felt comfortable.

The only maintenance i've done so far is lubing the deck and vacuuming under the motor hood.

We are very pleased with this treadmill and believe we will get several years of steady use.

Follow-Up Review

Submitted by wdc (Washington, DC) on Nov, 2013

After one month of use (40 miles a week), we have nothing but good things to say about our AFG 7.1AT treadmill. AFG sent out a new safety key, and we have had no further problems. The treadmill is smooth, quiet, and more comfortable to use than the commercial LifeFitness and Precor treadmills at our local gym. We remain very pleased with our decision to purchase the 7.1AT.

Solid except for safety key glitch

Submitted by wdc (Washington, DC) on Oct, 2013

After spending more than two weeks obsessing over the best combination of quality and cost in purchasing our first treadmill, we settled on the AFG 7.1AT. We looked at treadmills ranging in cost from $1,000 to $3,500, but couldn't see any reason to spend twice as much when the AFG 7.1AT seemed to offer everything found on the more expensive models (e.g., True, Landice and LifeFitness). In particular, the 7.1AT was both rock-solid in action and included a wider range of fitness program options than comparable or even more expensive brands/models.

Our AFG treadmill arrived yesterday, and with the exception of an early safety key glitch, it has met our expectations. We had to adjust the belt, which was running to the right, but then the treadmill performed flawlessly during my daughter's initial 8-mile run, running smoothly and quietly. We haven't sorted through all the programs yet, but are looking forward to exploring those, including the Passport feature, over the coming weeks. We had some concerns about making such a major purchase when the reviews on nearly all brands of treadmills include examples of major problems on arrival, but it looks like we made the right choice with AFG.

We do have some concerns about the safety key, which initially would not engage. It's working now, and we are being careful not to move or dislodge it, but we are hoping to obtain a new one that will function properly (i.e., register properly upon insertion without too much fiddling around). Also, consistent with another review, it does not appear that the hand-grip monitor accurately measures a user's pulse or heart rate--the instructions advise the user to stand on the side rails during measurement, but it seems odd to require a user to stop running to measure his or her heart rate. The chest belt may work more accurately, but it would be nice if the hand-grips performed as advertised.

Overall, however, we are very happy with our AFG 7.1AT, and would recommend it to others looking to purchase a high-quality treadmill at a reasonable price.

Passport Rocks

Submitted by JDubya (Nazareth, PA) on Dec, 2012

Solid machine. Works well. No squeaks. Am ~210 lbs and the machine doesn't even seem like it's straining.

The passport feature may be the coolest thing about the machine. I'm set up so I can watch Italy or the Soutwest US on a 9' screen. It's amazingly realistic and makes you forget about how long you're on the machine.

Only gripe - when I bought it I was told more locations were coming out for Passport soon. None have. AFG where are the scenes I was promised! They're a great selling point.

Worth the sale price but not the original

Submitted by Elisabeth W (Atlanta, GA) on May, 2013

The 7.1AT Treadmill is a good treadmill for the price that it is listed on sale as, but if you think you are getting a $3000 piece of equipment for $1700, think again. It does all of the things a quality treadmill will do - various programs, multi-users, a decent dashboard with speed, distance, time, etc. - but some of the advance features either don't work or are not the value they're purported to be.

I really like that I can plug in my iPhone and the speaker quality on playing music is very good. This is probably the one feature that sets it apart from other $1500 range treadmills.

However, the marketing on this unit is very misleading. Their agreement with Nike has either expired or the terms expired. The Nike / iPod Workout Tracking only works with iPhones that are 3S or earlier. So, anyone with a relatively new iPhone will not be able to use this feature. This is something I was looking forward to, and since the technology obviously exists, is something AFG could solve by coming out with their own smartphone app.

Also, the safety key is very sensitive - too sensitive in my opinion. I've used many different treadmills over the years, and if you even graze this unit's safety key, the treadmill will stop. This can be annoying as the key is in front of other frequently used tabs.

Finally, the heart rate monitor hand grips seems to be inaccurate / unreliable. This feature isn't incredibly important to me, so it doesn't bother me. I haven't used the strap that comes with the 7.1AT, but I imagine it would be more accurate for those who really track their heart rate during a workout.

The Passport feature was something our salesperson pitched hard when selling us the unit. Quite frankly, when I tested it, I felt slightly motion sick. Again, not something I'm incredibly interested in as I typically read, listen to music or watch TV when I'm on the treadmill.
